Origin and purpose
Commissioned to commemorate the 60th birth anniversary of Bhutan’s Fourth King, Jigme Singye Wangchuck, the project also fulfills ancient prophecies by Guru Rinpoche and tertön Pema Lingpa foretelling a great Buddha statue built in this region to bestow blessings of peace on the world. Construction began in 2006 and cost over US $100 million, funded largely by international patrons.
Design and structure
Cast in China and assembled on-site, the statue sits atop an 18-meter-high mandala-shaped base housing a vast meditation hall adorned with murals and mandalas. Within the hollow body are 100,000 8-inch and 25,000 12-inch gold-gilded bronze Buddhas symbolizing enlightenment for all beings. Its serene countenance and gold sheen dominate the Thimphu skyline, visible from much of the valley.
Religious and cultural significance
Buddha Dordenma embodies Bhutan’s fusion of modern craftsmanship and timeless spirituality. It anchors Kuenselphodrang Nature Park—943 acres of forested land dedicated to environmental harmony—and is integral to national festivals and meditation practices. The monument reflects the kingdom’s guiding philosophy of Gross National Happiness, linking spiritual well-being with sustainable development.
Visiting experience
Known locally as Buddha Point, the site is open daily and accessible by a short drive from central Thimphu. Visitors can walk the circumambulatory path lined with prayer wheels, meditate in the hall, or take in panoramic valley views, especially at sunrise or sunset. Modest dress and quiet reflection are encouraged to honor its sacred atmosphere.
